This is a picture taken during a break in a tennis match dated between 1918 and 1930. The picture is a series of 4 photographs placed together. No longer grass, the courts have changed to clay.

Notable features, besides that of the players themselves, are the numerous straw boaters - a traditional hat for tennis matches of the period - the variety of ladies summer hats, boys wool caps, and a number of vehicles, including, perhaps two Ford Model T's (1908-1928), one with its roof clearly raised into position. The 4-door limousine with the spare on the fender and distinctive door handle locations is reminiscent of at least 5 vehicle types: Phianna (1916-1921), Packard (1920 Model 3-35 Twin-Six Sedan), Pierce Arrow (1921 Model 32 Vestibule Sedan), Lincoln (1922-1928 Limousine), and the Franklin (1924 Model C and 1926 Model A Sedan).

Most, if not all, of the houses still exist today.

This picture is very large, so we have two versions. The smaller version is 98KB, and the larger version is 410KB. Both pictures are the same physical size but the larger version has a sharper image. The larger version will require more time to download.

We obtained a copy of this picture from the Northside Historical Society.
